Continuing Professional Development Modules

These modular materials have been developed to support teacher trainers involved in delivering accredited training programmes for all staff teaching literacy, numeracy and language learners. The modules are arranged in small 'bite-size' chunks to suit busy teachers.

Materials were developed as part of the LSC Skills for Life Quality Initiative between 2003 and 2005 and the Learning for Living DfES pathfinder 2006.

They include detailed session plans, a range of activities and support materials, suggestions for assessment and signposting to additional resources and background reading. The materials will provide an extremely useful resource for teacher trainers to select from and integrate into professional development programmes.

It is strongly recommended that the modules are used as part of accredited programmes. It should be emphasised that participants can only be accredited if the modules are delivered as part of an approved awarding institution programme.

The Literacy and ESOL modular framework materials at levels 2 and 3 are currently offered by NOCN. The Numeracy modular framework materials will fit into level 4 programmes based on the subject specifications. Accreditation routes for the Pre-entry Curriculum Framework modules at all three levels have yet to be confirmed, but materials have been mapped against the Certificate for Adult Learner Support at level 2, and the personal skills aspects of the subject specifications at levels 3 and 4.

There is a full set of modular materials embedded in a framework covering FENTO Subject Specialist Specifications in Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL at Level 4. They are available for any HEI or awarding body wishing to take them up as a basis for the development of an accredited programme or to integrate into their existing level 4 programmes.
